Winds coming in from the south were the norm across the entire island today. This led us to visit once again the flying area at La Guancha in Ponce. There, Luis Ruiz was joined by Team Kamikazes pilot Nixon Porrata and local pilot Randy Tirado.
A new student begins training…
Also arriving from Portland, Oregon, to start his training with the Kamikazes school was Kent Conradsen, accompanied by his wife Amy. While Nixon and Randy were flying around the area, Luis Ruiz began Kent’s training.
This included the theoretical parts of flight, discussions to clear up any doubts that came up while explaining the concepts, and of course, Kent’s first ground-handling practices, where he got to know and try to control the paraglider.
Gentle afternoon winds and a hotel rescue for Randy…
Nixon and Randy took advantage of a small flight window to go flying a second time. In Randy’s case, he barely managed to take off due to the light winds at that moment.
Everything went smoothly once he was in the air, but… when it came time to land, Randy couldn’t find any safe landing options in the La Guancha area and ended up landing on the hotel’s golf course.
Luis and Nixon had to go all the way there to pick him up, and with that, they called it a day.
